About Jubilee Arts

Jubilee Arts is a community program providing arts opportunities to the residents of the Sandtown-Winchester, Upton, and surrounding neighborhoods in Baltimore, Maryland. Jubilee Arts is located on the historic Pennsylvania Avenue. Once the hub of African-American arts and entertainment in Baltimore, this area has been struggling for decades to regain its former glory and combat the ills of poverty, drugs and violence. It is the mission of Jubilee Arts to restore the rich cultural heritage and vivacity of this famous corridor and provide arts opportunities to the people in this community.

  What we do:
  • Offer classes in ceramics, visual arts, creative writing and dance to people of all ages. Classes are held year-round, with nominal class fees under $10 for both adults and children. Recent classes include Chicago Step, Hand Dance, African dance and drum, Spoken Word,   and Mural Drawing.
  • Offer opportunities for local artists to teach, volunteer, and exhibit their work.
  • Host cultural events including performances, exhibitions and special workshops.

Who we serve:

  • People ages 6 and older in Baltimore’s underserved Sandtown-Winchester, Upton, and surrounding neighborhoods.

A few of our accomplishments in 2011 include:
  • the provision of arts activities and cultural opportunities to approximately 1,500 youth and adults
  • completion of an indoor mural with 4th and 5th graders at Gilmor Elementary School
  • the establishment of our official teen advisory group, Youth in Action, and submission of our first
  •  youth-created and led community project grant
  • the provision of more than 200 lunches through our participation in the Summer Food Program
  • our participation in more than 15 community and school events
  • the increase of consistent community youth participation by approximately 35%
  • the provision of more than 20 unique classes and 10 special events and exhibits
  • compound coverage by local media including WEAA, WYPR and 92Q, as well as some print
  • selection as Johns Hopkins University’s inaugural Henrietta Lacks Memorial Award recipient
